Hyde Park, NY 12538-1763

Eveready Diner is a Hyde Park institution. All bright stainless steel and neon outside, good food inside. A cut above the usual diner fare, with quality and presentation obviously influenced by the proximity of the Culinary Institute of America, just down the road. Fresh bread and other baked goods, decadent cocktails, and huge portions (of course!). You may not automatically get the loaf of fresh warm bread that's supposed to come with most entrees, especially if you're a singleton, so don't forget to ask. You may be tempted to make a meal of the bread and take the dinner home. The menu can be confusing, with dishes scattered in unlikely places and with a few inscrutable names like "The Eveready Pile-Up. Incidentally, the menu also has a few examples of the expected typos and misplaced punctuation, especially on the Breakfast page -- they're probably deliberate, just to add a touch of charming authenticity. A favorite inexpensive dinner combination of mine is the Fire Cracker Chili paired with a thick Eveready Chocolate Malt (made with REAL ICE CREAM). On the down side, sadly, the restrooms are not always sparkling. Also, for some reason there's a high turnover in the wait staff, who can sometimes be a bit clueless but are consistently pleasant. I hear service can bog down during busy weekday lunch periods, so don't expect to be in and out in a flash. Curious? You can view lots of photos and the entire menu at http://www.theevereadydiner.com/.

Owner John Jaeb puts excellence first, along with providing the appropriate service for the type of car and owner. Besides being one of the nicest guys you've ever met, John keeps up with all the latest technologies and even reminds you when your oil changes and inspections are due (unless you opt out of this valuable service). Within just a short time (maybe two years), The Caar Shop has grown from a one-man operation into a full-service facility with several competent technicians. If it's integrity and competency you're looking for in a garage, you don't need to look any further in Hyde Park than The Caar Shop. Visit the Web site at http://www.thecaarshop.kr-i.com/.

805 Main Street
Poughkeepsie, NY 12603

Mole Mole refers to the unique, sweet and savory Mexican sauce made of chiles and chocolate, among other delicious things. The logo humorously puts an accent over the e where none exists in Spanish, perhaps to discourage Gringo associations with small rodents and to play off the Spanish cheer of praise at the bull ring (o-LAY). This is the genuine article, Mexican food like mothers from Oaxaca state make it (with an option for Tex-Mex). Freshly chopped salsa of onion, tomato, and cilantro. Tortilla chips fried on the premises and still warm when they reach your table. Freshness and flavor are the key, and Mole Mole has them both in spades. And if you like tamales or tortillas with mole sauce, it's heaven. The place is tiny, designed mostly for take-out, but a few tables are available for eating in. Service is spotty; you can't necessarily expect table service, so it's best to order at the counter and then take a seat. Your meal will usually be brought to your table. Poughkeepsie's Main Street is gritty and rundown, but not especially scary or dangerous this far out of the city center. Parking is on the street. Mole Mole is very reasonably priced and highly recommended.
